Syracuse native wins gold in London, sets world record

LONDON, U.K. -- A Syracuse native has won a gold medal in a 2012 Olympic swimming event.

Dana Vollmer, 24, swam the 100 meter butterfly in just under 56 seconds. She not only earned herself a gold medal, but also broke the world record in the event.

Vollmer competed in her first Olympics in 2004, winning her first gold medal at the age of 15. And at 12, she was the youngest competitor at the 2000 Olympic trials.

Vollmer was born in Syracuse and raised in Granbury, Texas.
