WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- There were some tense moments for firefighters in Jefferson County Monday night. A loaded tractor trailer fuel tanker travelling northbound on Interstate 81 caught fire, sending smoke drifting over the road.
It was the rear axle wheels that caught fire and not the load, but officials say there was the danger of the fire spreading had they not gotten to it in time.
Traffic was halted in both directions between Exits 45 and 44 within the Town of Watertown for several hours, but lanes have since reopened.
