JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- Boaters now have a new tool to help them navigate the St. Lawrence and it can all be done from a smart phone.

The New York Sea Grant launched a website Tuesday, extending the Great Lakes Global Observing System to the St. Lawrence River. The site will provide real-time and 12-hour forecasts of water currents and water depth on the entire river.

Users of the site can also sign up for email and text alerts. It even includes information for the Canadian side.

Over the past few weeks, boaters have been out in the water, fine tuning the information, getting ready for this launch.

"As many people know on the river, we've got either ponding, cooling, draw down, a lot of activity that can occur on the river in a short period of time. This will give boaters an extra tool to look at for information that will help them have a good boating day," said Dave White, New York Sea Grant Recreation and Tourism Specialist.
