UTICA, N.Y. -- After standing empty and silent for two weeks, the sounds of summer have returned to Utica's Buckley Pool.
Mayor Rob Palmieri was on hand to welcome back swimmers when the pool reopened Tuesday.
It looked like it would be closed all summer after a pump broke earlier this month and burned out electrical service. A group of residents banded together to raise the money needed to fix the pool and area kids say they couldn't be happier.
"It hasn't been open for a long time and I kept saying, 'Mommy, I want to go to the pool. Mommy, I want to go to the pool because it's so hot," said eight-year-old Jaden Retamar.
"We're just going to swim in the pool, have fun and whoever comes here that's our friend, we're going to play with them," said Airin Retamar, 5, who came swimming with brother Jaden and their grandmother.
The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida counties also helped with funding for repairs.
