SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- As the 2012 London Olympics enters its second week, the Hearth on James senior living community is hosting its own set of games.

The first Senior Summer Olympics started with the opening ceremonies last Wednesday. Monday was the first day of competition with the relay race.

Seniors age 56 to 98 will compete in six events throughout the month.

The senior competitors are tested in areas of intellectual, social, physical and vocational skills and awarded gold, silver and bronze medals.

Organizers say it's a great way to involve the whole community.

“It brings joy to the community. Our families were involved, all the staff gets excited. So it's a great way to keep our residents happy and healthy, as I said with our ‘live more’ philosophy in our communities," said Skip Collins, community relations director.

Other events of this month's senior summer games are volleyball, cycling, golf, Wii bowling and horse racing.
