JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- Fire officials are investigating a barn fire in the Jefferson County town of Rutland that killed several dozen cows. Crews were called to the John Garvin dairy farm on Staplin Road around 4 a.m.

By the time firefighters got to the scene, the barn was completely engulfed in flames and knocked down. Officials say the fire had been burning for at least five hours before anyone called them.

"The only thing I'd say was unusual is that went so long without being noticed. I mean, it was the middle of the night but normally there's a car somewhere going around. It's just unfortunate that we didn't get a call earlier,” said Chief Jery Kirch, Rutland Fire Department.

Eight departments in all responded to the fire. Authorities estimate that at least 90 cows were killed in the fire.
