ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Emergency response teams are coming together to prepare for an emergency drill at Hancock Airport in Syracuse. On Saturday, multiple emergency response teams will be holding a full-scale simulation aircraft emergency.

The goal is to prepare in case something major were to happen in Syracuse in the future. The airport and local emergency teams are required to put their emergency plan to the test every three years. Officials say this type of simulation helps the fire department, in particular, because an aircraft fire is much different than a building fire.

"The major difference here is the majority of the fire they're fighting is flammable liquids so we're looking at large amounts of fuel that are very dynamic. As they try to fight the fire on one side of the aircraft, that fuel can actually run and ignite on the other side of the aircraft," said Bill Elderbroom, Deputy Chief, Syracuse Fire Department.

Officials want to remind people living near the airport the drill will be going on Saturday, so if you see smoke or large amounts of emergency vehicles in the area, don't be alarmed and don't call 911.
