JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- A historic stone house in the Jefferson County hamlet of Champion is getting a much needed makeover.

Built in 1820, the home had been in the Hubbard family through the years until it was donated to the Four River Valleys Historical Society in 2005.

The organization got the home placed on the National Register of Historic Places and secured a $130,000 grant for repairs and renovations. They eventually plan to use it as their headquarters and as a museum, but first, repairs need to be made, including getting rid of a stream running across the basement floor which was causing moisture problems throughout the building.

“Then you did get some deterioration, especially peeling paint, some mold, not as bad a mold problem like a lot of places have, but we still did have mold and we knew that we couldn’t really do anything until we got the water situation solved, so that’s what we are working on now,” said Lynn Thornton, Vice President of Four River Valleys Historical Society.

A trench was excavated around the outside foundation to help dry out the cellar. The foundation stonework will be sealed up to further reduce the water seeping into the home’s basement.
