Taft murder trial continues

A second day of testimony is over in the murder trial of Veronica Taft. The Baldwinsville mother is facing several charges in connection with the 2010 death of her son, Lyric. It occurred in Binghamton where the Taft was living at that time. Our Melissa Kakareka has more from inside the courtroom.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Two-year-old Lyric Taft was found unresponsive in his bed at 4 1/2 Fayette Street in Binghamton back in December of 2010. His mother, Veronica Taft, is now on trial for his murder in Broome County Court.

On Wednesday, a husband and wife who lived across the street from Taft both broke down in tears as they testified about the day of Lyric's death. Both said that she showed little emotion while the husband performed CPR. But the defense questioned that testimony, saying they previously told police that Veronica was hysterical.

The wife also said that she had previously called Child Protective Services about Taft.

The jury also heard testimony from an emergency room doctor as well as Dr. James Terzian, who performed Lyric's autopsy.

Both say that the child had multiple bruises and scrapes on his head and body, which they believe were caused by a blunt trauma. The child's abdominal cavity was also full of blood and his liver was torn.

When the prosecution showed the jury photos of Lyric's bruised body, Veronica Taft began crying.

More witnesses will take the stand on Thursday.
