JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- A paper dummy provided a very vivid reminder of why farm safety should be on everyone’s mind.

A demonstration Wednesday in Town of Champion showed what kind of damage a tractor can do and why it should always be shut off when engaging or disengaging equipment.

Farming is the fourth highest occupation in fatal injury rates because of the potentially deadly equipment and machinery used on farms.

Families at the seminar were also schooled on tractor rollovers, silo emergencies, chemical and pesticide poisonings and how to stay calm and act quickly in an emergency. The goal was to give everyone a basic understanding of farm equipment.

"It’s important that everybody have an understanding of the machinery that is used so that, God forbid that it happens, if you come upon a scene you at least have an understanding of how to turn it off until the rescue equipment can come,” said Galen Gockley, Great Bend Dairy Farmer.

The presentation was put on by the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health based in Cooperstown.

A number of firemen and emergency responders also came to the seminar besides farmers and agricultural employees and family members.
