National Weather Service says damage due to straight line winds

By: Web Staff

NEW YORK STATE -- Tuesday's storm that crossed through Cortland and Chenango counties does not appear to have produced a tornado. The National Weather Service sent crews out Wednesday to survey the damage.

The area between Virgil and Solon was hit hard just after 8 p.m. Tuesday, however, meteorologists say it was straight line winds that did the damage. They estimate winds topped out around 70 and 80 miles per hour, bringing down some trees along a seven-and-a-half mile path.
