ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Despite widespread evidence of the West Nile virus in Onondaga County, health officials say they have no plans for aerial spraying at this time. A number of mosquito pools tested positive for the virus over the last few weeks, and health officials say an adult was briefly hospitalized after contracting the virus.

But officials say because of the dry summer, the number of mosquitoes in the area is actually near a record low. They continue to monitor those numbers and will make future decisions on spraying based on that information.

"We really need to take each case as it comes. I think that's what's both frustrating for people and certainly challenging for us. We can't make a single decision that's going to stick at any given point. We have to take the most current information that we have, and use all of the science, all of the evidence that we have to make the best decision for that very specific circumstance," said Dr. Cynthia Morrow, Onondaga County Health Commissioner.

Regardless of what the county decides, Morrow continues to urge residents to take personal precautions against mosquitoes.
