ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Department of Environmental Conservation has issued a notice for Black Lake because of algae blooms on the water.

Blue-green algae is naturally present in lakes and streams, but under the right conditions, they can form blooms, which can cause health problems if a person or pet comes in contact with them.

The affected area is only in a few sections of the 23 mile long lake near Tavern and Conger Islands. In those areas, the DEC is advising no swimming or eating fish caught in the bloom because they may contain harmful toxins.

The rest of the lake where algae blooms are not present is still safe for water activities.
