ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- After more than 60 years, the remains of a Korean War soldier killed in action has returned home to Central New York.

Corporal Elmer Kidd of Seneca Falls had been awarded a number of honors and medals, including the Purple Heart. He served in both the Army and Navy.

Kidd was killed in action in 1950, but had been unidentified until DNA testing confirmed who he was last month.

Tuesday, his remains were returned to his only living sibling.

"We never knew what happened to him. My mother, all these years, has talked on whatever happened to him. We had all kinds of rumors, on how they would fly, on how he had maybe married a Korean woman and stayed there. But we never knew what happened. Now we finally have closure," said Larry Stuck, Kidd’s nephew.

“This has a lot of meaning to us. It's telling our country and our soldiers that they are not forgotten. We are still going to look for them, no matter how long it takes," said Pat Christensen, Patriot Guard Senior Ride Captain.

A motorcade escorted the remains back to Seneca Falls. A burial service with full military honors will be held Friday at 12:45 p.m. at the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Romulus.
