LIVERPOOL, N.Y. -- If the shoe doesn't fit, donate it. That's one Onondaga County girl's message to her community this holiday season.

Eleven-year-old Lizzy Cubero is collecting gently used children's shoes to send to less fortunate young people in Guatemala. She calls the project Lizzy's Laces of Love.

Lizzy says she was inspired after hearing a missionary who'd been to the country speak at her church. She began collecting sneakers, sandals and boots when she learned some children in Guatemala are so poor they can't afford shoes. Now she's hoping the spirit of the season will inspire others to contribute to her cause.

"It's not all about you. It's for giving, mostly. You don't need all the presents yourself. You can help and give to other people, too," she said.

The Northside Baptist Church of Liverpool will take the shoes to Guatemala during a mission trip early next year. Children's shoes of all sizes and styles can be dropped off at 4070 Kidron Lane in Liverpool until the end of January.
