OSWEGO COUNTY, N.Y. -- Three deputies from Oswego County were injured trying to take a man into custody Wednesday after it was reported that a person was swinging a hatchet at passing motorists on County Route 10 in the Town of Schroeppel.

The suspect, James Rogers, 55, of Pennellville, still had a hatchet in his hand when deputies arrived.

After refusing to drop the weapon, Rogers reportedly came at the deputies aggressively, at which point he was pepper sprayed.

Rogers was taken into custody and later evaluated at a local hospital.

Three members of the sheriff's department were also treated for injuries. One suffered a broken hand, another hurt his knee and the third was cut.

Rogers is now facing various assault and weapons charges.

The Sheriff's office is asking to speak with anyone who may have seen him in the area of County Route 10 near Oneida River Road. The number to call is (315) 349-3411.
