JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- A school district in Jefferson County got some good news concerning their school bus situation.

In April, a fire at General Brown's bus garage damaged the building and destroyed more than a dozen school buses.

After the fire, the school district only had about six working buses and have been leasing buses since then. But now Senator Patty Ritchie was able to get a $200,000 grant to help the district buy a couple of new buses.

"It was a priority as soon as I heard about the fire and the fact that most all the buses were destroyed to work with the school system to help mitigate the cost to the taxpayers," Ritchie said.

"So the board of education will be deciding in the near future exactly how to move forward, either leasing the entire fleet or with replacing, developing a bus replacement schedule," Superintendent Stephan Vigliotti said.

In addition to the costs of replacing the buses, it will be about $700,000 to repair the damage sustained to the bus garage.
