CENTRAL NEW YORK -- As students across the country head back to school today, Friday's tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut continues to be on the minds of many. Police agencies and school districts across the area are increasing security and are providing additional resources to help make students feel safe.

Numerous districts have released statements and are contacting parents to reinforce safety, as well as the importance of talking to children about the tragedy.

"We've put out a communication from the National School Psychologists Association that's an excellent communication. And that communication helps parents with children of all ages understand how to talk to your child, how to explain to them that schools are safe,” said Dr. Nonna DeSiato, East Syracuse-Minoa Superintendent.
