As students across the country head back to school today, Friday's tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut continues to be on the minds of many. 20 children were among 26 people were killed in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Now, local districts want to ensure parents they will do all they can to keep children in our schools safe. CENTRAL NEW YORK -- As students across the country head back to school today, Friday's tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut continues to be on the minds of many. Police agencies and school districts across the area are increasing security and are providing additional resources to help make students feel safe.

Numerous districts have released statements and are contacting parents to reinforce safety, as well as the importance of talking to children about the tragedy.

"We've put out a communication from the National School Psychologists Association that's an excellent communication. And that communication helps parents with children of all ages understand how to talk to your child, how to explain to them that schools are safe,” said Dr. Nonna DeSiato, East Syracuse-Minoa Superintendent.

In the wake of Friday's tragedy, state police will be at local schools to help ensure that all children are safe. Jack Keller, the public information officer with Troop D, spoke about what parents need to know.
