SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- People braved the snow and the cold at Fowler High School for the annual bike giveaway. More than 2,000 new and refurbished bikes were given to families in need.

It was the 17th year the giveaway has happened in Central New York. When it first started, only 125 bikes were handed out, but the idea took off through the years.

"I had no idea that we'd get up into the thousands. Thanks to the generosity of the Central New York community, people make sure that we have these bikes and a lot of people give us financial donations to make sure we have the parts to fix the bicycles," organizer Jan Maloff said.

Last year, a record 3,500 bikes were given away. Next year, organizers say they may start the push for bicycles a little earlier.
