The snow has begun to fall, Christmas is right around the corner and the Woods Valley Ski area is making their finishing touches ahead of opening day. But were those few inches of recent snow fall enough? Our Cara Thomas went to see how the preparations are going.

WESTERNVILLE, N.Y. -- It's turning into a late ski season again this year and resorts are chomping at the bit to open their doors. Woods Valley Ski Area says they're not waiting any longer. They're doing everything they can for a Christmas Eve Opening Day.

Resort owners say while the few inches of recent snowfall is definitely giving them a boost, it's just not enough on its own.

Time Woods, owner of Woods Valley Ski Area, said, "We made snow again last night, had to shut them down this morning because of the rising temperatures. Although everything is in the barn thawing out ready to go back on the hill this afternoon for another round of snow making tonight."

But a good few inches of snowfall isn't always the answer to their problems. Woods say to keep it, they're going to need the temperatures to drop.

"Do I get nervous when it's warm and the cold forecasts don't develop and don't materialize? Yeah, it makes me a little crazy, but it's a waiting game sometimes. We just need to make sure that when it does come we're ready to jump on it," said Woods.

But they don't just need the snow to cover the slopes, it's also a marketing tool. Last year, when hardly any snow was on the ground, people thought skiing was out of the question. But Woods says that's a common misconception.

He said, "Whether there's snow in your backyard or not, there's snow in our back yard so come on out and give us a try."

So with last year's winter leaving much to be desired and this season getting off to a late start, Woods says with any luck the snow will stick around until the early spring for a good long ski season.

Woods Valley Ski Area will be opening Monday (Christmas Eve) from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. They'll be closed for the Christmas holiday, but will open back up on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.
