Three people charged after shots fired at car

LEWIS COUNTY, N.Y. -- A Lewis County man has been arrested for firing a semi-automatic rifle at two people who were trying to steal his yard signs. The shots were fired near the pair's car, which had an eight-month old baby inside.

Timothy Bates, 51, of Watson was charged with several crimes including reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a firearm and endangering the welfare of a child. Police say the gun was not registered. They also found marijuana in his home.

Meanwhile, the two people that were stealing his signs, Robert Nagy, 25, and Desiree Balcom, 19, were charged with petit larceny, trespassing and also endangering the welfare of a child.

Bates posted bail and was released until his next court date.

The baby boy was not injured.
