SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse firefighters came together to remember fallen comrades on the 74th anniversary of the department's worst tragedy. A ceremony was held at the Firefighter's Memorial Park on East Genesee Street Sunday morning.

The ceremony is held each year on this date to commemorate the 1939 Collins Block fire. Nine firefighters died battling that blaze. The ceremony honors all those who have lost their lives while protecting the community.

Syracuse Fire Chief Mark McLees said, "For someone to give their life, to make what we call the supreme sacrifice, and then have their memory gone is a shame. So that's why we, as firefighters, every year we will continue to do this, not let their memories fade."

In total, 45 firefighters have died in the line of duty in the City of Syracuse.

The City of Syracuse has lost 45 firefighters in the line of duty. Every year, they're remembered with a ceremony at the Firefighter's Memorial Park.
