In a place where they're used to measuring snow in feet, people love their wintry fun. And that love affair continued with Oswego County's Winter Carnival Saturday. Our Candace Hopkins introduces us to some of the people who took a cold plunge.

SANDY CREEK, N.Y.--The temperature in Sandy Creek Saturday afternoon may have hovered in the twenties, but for some, like Tyler Lamb, it was the perfect day for a swim in Sandy Pond.

"The water wasn't bad. The weather's not bad. Couldn't ask for anything better," Lamb said.

Lamb was just one of dozens who braved the cold. One by one, groups took their turn jumping in, many decked out in unusual costumes.

"It wasn't that bad, the water is actually warmer than the air is, so you can't complain about that," said Lamb.

And while some people decided to stay on shore, their encouragement gave the swimmers the push they needed to venture in.

"I think it was outstanding, the crowd was great, they were really into it, it's for a good cause, exhilarating," said Polar Plunge participant Michael Scott.

2012 was the first year of the carnival and organizers say its popularity has skyrocketed. That's good news for the Salmon River International Sport Fishing Museum. They receive all of the proceeds from the event.

"We went from 34 plungers last year to 119 this year and raised several thousand dollars for the museum," said Carnival Organizer Vernon Chamberlain.

And if chilly water isn't your thing, there are also dog sled rides, ice fishing, food and entertainment. The fun continues Sunday.

The top two best dressed individuals or teams received the "Best Plunge Attire" honor. Awards were also given out to the plungers who raised the most money for the museum.
