UNITED STATES -- Last week we told you about a new egg-free flu vaccine. Flublok has now been approved by the FDA for distribution.

The vaccination is made by Protein Sciences Corporation. Rather than make the whole flu virus like current vaccines, Flublok takes just the small piece of the virus needed for immunity and grows it in insect cells. It's the first flu vaccine to use this recombinant DNA technology.

The benefit of this method is that it takes about half the time to produce the vaccine as the traditional method.

Right now, there are 150,000 doses available for distribution. But next year, their facility in Pearl River, New York, will be able to produce between two and three million doses.
