ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira City School District is facing another budget crisis for the upcoming year. The proposed 2013-2014 budget was presented to the school board Wednesday night.

The superintendent outlined several options to address a $6.1 million deficit, including a tax hike. He said if they stick to the 2-percent tax cap, the deficit would drop to $5.5 million.

Going over the cap, with a 4.67 percent increase would bring it down to $4.7 million.

Cuts to services are also part of the plan.

The superintendent says the funding formula has left them with few options.

Elmira City School District Superintendent Joseph Hochreiter said, "This district has cut a lot of expenses over the last four years and sadly that continues to be the trend. The reality is that health insurance and pension costs are outpacing are ability to bring in new revenue, and are outpacing our increases in state aid."

Also revealed were plans to possibly sell several vacant buildings in the district. That money would go toward balancing the budget.
