ELMIRA, N.Y. -- An Elmira man pleads guilty to stabbing a woman 40 times because he believed she was setting him up.
Lee Doane admitted in Chemung County Court to killing Susan Mitchell at her Elmira home in July. Doane pleaded guilty to second degree murder and accepted a plea bargain to serve 23-years to life in prison for the crime.
The Chemung County District Attorney says Doane told the court he thought Mitchell was trying to set him up to be arrested and the night of her death, he confronted her about his suspicions. Mitchell denied it, and Doane says he stabbed her in the chest 40 times to make sure she was dead.
The DA says Doane acknowledged what he did was wrong and wanted to take responsibility for his actions. He will be back in court for sentencing on November 2.
