BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- The first official National Lab Day is on the books, giving students a chance to see what it's really like to be a scientist.

Binghamton University hosted around 200 school-aged children Wednesday at one of the main on-campus labs. While the school has been doing this informally for years, this lab day is part of a larger national effort to gear more students toward math and science through interactive experience.

"I think a lot of young children in particular, they can picture in their minds eye, here's what a doctor looks like, here's what a teacher looks like, but they may not have a good mental picture of what is a scientist and where does a scientist go to work. And what does that space look like," said Rachel Coker, BU Research Advancement Director.
