Henrik Lundqvist shut out the New Jersey Devils and the Rangers put two goals past Martin Brodeur as the Blue Shirts won Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals 3-0 Monday night at Madison Square Garden.
Lundqvist, one of this year's Vezina Trophy candidates, outdueled New Jersey's future Hall of Fame netminder as the Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
After two scoreless periods, Dan Girardi got the Rangers on the board less than a minute into the third, before Chris Kreider extended the lead with a power play goal midway through the period.
Artem Anisimov added an empty net goal with a minute and a half remaining.
Lundqvist, who was named the game's first star, finished the game with 21 saves to Brodeur's 27.
Game 2 is Wednesday night at the Garden. The winner of the series moves on to play the Western Conference winner in the Stanley Cup finals.
