UTICA, N.Y. -- Those who knew the man killed in an overnight shooting in Utica say they are shocked by his death, and are calling for an end to violence in the city.

Friends set up a memorial to Jermaine Stubbs, 35, early Monday morning. Police say by the time they arrived in the 600 block of Lenox Avenue just before 2 a.m., Stubbs had already died from gunshot wounds.

One man who says he's a lifelong friend of Stubbs described him as a peaceful family man. He says, given a string of shots fired reports and last week's shooting that injured a man, he's not surprised a homicide followed.

"All these shots - that's what it was leading up to. Shots, shots, shots - you could call them warning shots. Eventually somebody was going to get killed. I'm sorry that it happened to Jermaine," said Anthony Spratt, Stubbs’ friend.
